To teach my kids budgeting, I would count the weeks until Christmas break, calculate the cost of a limited number of school lunches per week, and write a check for that amount. My three children had a choice: They could either pack their lunch or buy it at the school cafeteria. It was more fun to buy, but more economical to pack. If the kids ran out of money before break, they got to pack lunches until after break.
