The Potty Dance

by Tammy M. Ferguson, licensed counselor

We panicked when my twirling, tiptoeing, tutu-wearing daughter, Macie, turned 3 and was not potty trained. The tried-and-true techniques had failed, and we knew we needed to cater to the uniqueness of our daughter.

"Mommy, Daddy, let's dance!" was a frequent request at our house. One day it dawned on me: We need to dance our way to successful potty training! Enter "the potty dance."

Every time Macie sat on the potty, my husband and I would do a silly, goofy dance. Macie would giggle with delight.

Soon after, she was potty trained. "Mommy and Daddy, I went potty," she would proudly say. "Let's do the potty dance!"
